What’s Your Impossible? (Joshua 10:1-15) - By Jason Sheppard
As members of the body of Christ, we share in a rich heritage of practices that are central to our faith. Among the most significant are the two sacraments that Jesus Himself instituted: Baptism and the Lord's Supper (Communion).
Here at Karen Vineyard Church, these are necessary and central to our worship. While they may be a regular part of our church life, taking time to understand their biblical roots and profound significance is essential for a deeper, more meaningful walk with God. This article is a guide to exploring what these sacred acts mean and why they matter in our lives today. Baptism: A Public Declaration of a New Life Baptism is a beautiful and powerful symbol of our spiritual rebirth and commitment to Christ. It's a public and outward declaration of an inward spiritual reality. The practice finds its New Testament origin in the Great Commission, where Jesus commanded His disciples, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19-20). It signifies our identification with Christ's death, burial, and resurrection. Just as we are submerged in water and then raised up, we symbolize that our old sinful nature has died and we are raised to new life in Christ. This is powerfully described in Romans 6:4, where the Apostle Paul writes, "We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life." In baptism, the whole church is affirming that the individual not only belongs to Christ, but also belongs to a specific spiritual family, namely, the local church. Baptism is how a church joyfully welcomes a child of God into their family. Upcoming Baptism Our next baptism class is scheduled for this Sunday at 9:00 AM at the Kenya School of Law, before our regular service. All are welcome to attend and learn more about this significant step in the Christian journey, with no commitment to be baptized. You can RSVP Here. The ceremony will be on Sunday, August 31st. Communion: Remembering His Sacrifice, Anticipating His Return Also known as the Lord's Supper or Holy Communion is a solemn and joyous act of remembrance that Christ commanded us to practice. Its biblical foundation is in the Last Supper, the final meal Jesus shared with His disciples before His crucifixion. "And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, 'This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.' And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, 'This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood'" (Luke 22:19-20). As we partake in the bread and the cup, we are reminded that Jesus' body was broken and His blood was shed to establish a new covenant and secure our salvation. The Apostle Paul underscores this in 1 Corinthians 11:26: "For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes." This act is not just a personal one; it is a communal expression of our unity in Christ and our shared anticipation of His return. It is a family meal, with the Lord at the head of the table, present and participating with us as a church as we commemorate Him and deepem our bonds with one another. The power lies not in the physical elements themselves, but in the spiritual act of obedience and remembrance. Our Communion Service: We celebrate Communion together as a church on the last Sunday of every month. In Summary: More Than Rituals Baptism and Communion are more than just rituals; they are powerful, biblically-ordained acts that deepen our relationship with Christ and His church. Baptism serves as a powerful testimony of our salvation and new life, while Communion is a regular reminder of the cost of our redemption and a joyful proclamation of the hope we have in His return.
