Caleb And The Four Torches Of The Night (Joshua 14) - By PJ Alubbe
This coming Sunday will be a special service as we witness and celebrate 4 baptisms!
As we explored last week, baptism is a powerful and beautiful symbol of a believer's spiritual rebirth and commitment to Christ. It is an outward public declaration of the inward reality of a new life, signifying identification with Christ's death, burial, and resurrection (Romans 6:4). We are so excited to joyfully welcome these individuals into our spiritual family here at Karen Vineyard Church. In addition to these baptisms, we will also be celebrating Holy Communion together as a church family, as this is the last Sunday of the month. Holy Communion FAQs As we prepare, here are a few quick reminders that often come up: 1. What is Holy Communion? Also known as the Lord's Supper or Holy Communion is a solemn and joyous act of remembrance that Christ commanded us to practice. Its biblical foundation is in the Last Supper, the final meal Jesus shared with His disciples before His crucifixion. During communion, Christians partake of bread and wine (or grape juice) to remember and celebrate the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. It symbolizes His body which was broken for us and His blood which was shed for the forgiveness of our sins. 2. Why is Holy Communion important? Communion has three main purposes:
3. Who can participate in Holy Communion? At KVC, we offer an "open" Communion table to all followers of Christ, regardless of their denominational background. Anyone who has accepted God’s forgiveness and has surrendered their life to Jesus is welcome to participate. For those who are still exploring Christianity and have not yet made a commitment of faith, Communion offers a chance to reflect, pray, and invite God to be active in their journey. 4. How does KVC celebrate Communion? During our Communion service, we serve bread (or crackers) and grape juice. The bread represents the body of Jesus, which was broken for us on the cross. The juice is a symbol of His blood, which cleanses us from sin and seals God’s covenant of grace and forgiveness with us. 5. When is Communion celebrated? We celebrate Communion on the last Sunday of every month. This is part of our Family Sundays, when the whole church family including kids, youth, and adults, worships together in the main service. Family Sundays are a special time to:
6. What does “examining yourself” mean before Communion? The Bible, in 1 Corinthians 11:28, encourages believers to examine their hearts before they participate in communion. This involves confessing sin, asking for forgiveness, and making sure that our relationships with God and other people are right. It is a time for reflection, renewal, and getting ready to approach the table with reverence. 7. Can children take Holy Communion? Different traditions have different views on this. At KVC, we encourage children who have professed faith in Jesus and who understand the meaning of Communion to participate. We encourage parents to help their children understand its significance. 8. Is Communion necessary for salvation? No, Communion does not save us. Salvation is received through grace by faith in Jesus Christ alone. Communion is a symbolic act of remembrance and celebration for those who have already been saved. 9. Can Communion be taken outside of church? Yes, Communion can be celebrated in different settings like homes or small groups. As long as it is done with reverence, prayer, and an understanding of its meaning, it is a significant expression of faith and unity. 10. What happens if someone takes Communion improperly? Taking Communion without proper reflection or reverence can have spiritual consequences. It is important to approach Communion with a sincere heart, honoring its purpose and the sacrifice of Jesus. 11. What does Holy Communion teach us about unity? Communion is a reminder that we are all one body in Christ. The act of sharing the bread and the cup reflects our common faith, vision, and mission as followers of Jesus. It helps to break down divisions and unites us in His love. In Summary This Sunday will be a beautiful picture of the gospel: new life through baptism and renewed remembrance through communion. Let’s come ready to celebrate, reflect, and give thanks for the gift of salvation we have in Christ. Much love, Pastor Craig Church Updates & Upcoming Events Listen On the Go: Our Podcast is Live!
