Our Victorious God (Joshua 5-6) - By Okoth Lwanda
In Sunday's sermon, Okoth Lwanda unpacked the iconic story of the battle of Jericho from Joshua 5-6, revealing profound truths about faith, obedience, and God's surprising methods. The message was structured around three key themes: the strangeness of God's plan, the nature of true success, and the breadth of His salvation.
A Strange Battle Plan The sermon began by highlighting the bizarre instructions given to Joshua for conquering the fortified city of Jericho. Instead of a conventional military strategy, God commanded the Israelites to simply march around the city for seven days, led by priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant. This seemingly foolish plan served a divine purpose: to ensure that the victory would be undeniably God's, leaving no room for human pride. It teaches us that God's ways are often not our ways, and trusting Him sometimes means embracing the "strange." Success Through Obedience True success, as Lwanda explained, is rooted in trusting God and obeying His word, no matter how illogical it may seem. The Israelites' complete submission to this strange command, in the face of a powerful enemy, was an act of profound faith. The fall of Jericho wasn't due to military might, but to their obedience to God's instruction, reminding us that our victories are won through reliance on Him. Salvation for All Woven into this story of judgment is a powerful thread of grace: the salvation of Rahab. A Gentile and a prostitute, Rahab was saved because she chose to trust in the God of Israel. Her story is a beautiful illustration that God's mercy extends to everyone, regardless of their past or background. Her inclusion in the lineage of Jesus Christ stands as a testament to the transformative power of faith. The sermon challenges us to reflect: What "strange act of obedience" is God calling you to? How do you define success? And have you, like Rahab, thrown yourself upon the incredible mercy of God? Journey Through the Bible With Us!
